It made 16 horsepower at 1800 RPM with a 276 cubic inch displacement.

All I know about this is it’s a V12 for a boat. It’s impressive how big the starter is, on the lower right. The chrome tubing is nice, and you can see it hides and contains the wires from the distributor.

Now this is a beautiful old engine. It’s a Liberty L-12 airplane. It is a huge V12, roughly the same as the previous one. This was made only between 1917 and 1919, but 20,000 were built. It has a 27 liter displacement, which is roughly 5 times the size of the average modern V8 pickup truck engine, and it made 400 horsepower. It’s kind of hard to see the scale of this engine in the pictures, but it’s huge. If I stretched my arms out I might be able to touch both ends. Something I think is cool is how you can see the valve springs and rockers on the top.

New blog posts every Monday and Thursday, plus pictures throughout the week on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram!

Mechanical Malarkey T-shirts, hats, and stickers are available to order!

-Dan

Going back a few years for this one for some engines you don’t get to see every day.
