They&#8217;re more complicated to service, so here&#8217;s a guide on replacing them. You will want a lot of rags and gloves for this.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4054\" src=\"https:\/\/mechanicalmalarkey.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/2018_08_09_01.jpg\" alt=\"2018_08_09_01.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Remove the brake caliper. The vehicle pictured is my 1990 Ford F-250. If you need help removing the calipers, I recently posted a How To guide for that as well.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4055\" src=\"https:\/\/mechanicalmalarkey.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/2018_08_09_02.jpg\" alt=\"2018_08_09_02.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Use a screwdriver to remove the dust cap.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4056\" src=\"https:\/\/mechanicalmalarkey.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/2018_08_09_03.jpg\" alt=\"2018_08_09_03.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Remove the cotter pin.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4057\" src=\"https:\/\/mechanicalmalarkey.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/2018_08_09_04.jpg\" alt=\"2018_08_09_04.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>My truck has a separate part over the nut for the cotter pin to hold against, others will just have a castle nut.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4058\" src=\"https:\/\/mechanicalmalarkey.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/2018_08_09_05.jpg\" alt=\"2018_08_09_05.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Remove the nut.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4059\" src=\"https:\/\/mechanicalmalarkey.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/2018_08_09_06.jpg\" alt=\"2018_08_09_06.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Remove the washer and the outer bearing.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4060\" src=\"https:\/\/mechanicalmalarkey.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/2018_08_09_07.jpg\" alt=\"2018_08_09_07.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Thread the nut back onto the spindle.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4061\" src=\"https:\/\/mechanicalmalarkey.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/2018_08_09_08.jpg\" alt=\"2018_08_09_08.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Remove the rotor. The inner bearing will catch on the nut and get pulled out of the rotor.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4063\" src=\"https:\/\/mechanicalmalarkey.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/2018_08_09_09.jpg\" alt=\"2018_08_09_09.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Clean all the old grease off the spindle and put a thin coating of new grease on.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4062\" src=\"https:\/\/mechanicalmalarkey.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/2018_08_09_10.jpg\" alt=\"2018_08_09_10\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m using brand new bearings, but if your bearings are still in good condition you can can reuse them. Start with the inner bearing.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4064\" src=\"https:\/\/mechanicalmalarkey.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/2018_08_09_11.jpg\" alt=\"2018_08_09_11\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Fill a bearing packer with grease and place the bearing in, small side down.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4065\" src=\"https:\/\/mechanicalmalarkey.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/2018_08_09_12.jpg\" alt=\"2018_08_09_12\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Press down until grease starts to come out of the top. If you&#8217;re repacking an old bearing that still has old grease inside, it&#8217;ll get pushed out by the new grease.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4066\" src=\"https:\/\/mechanicalmalarkey.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/2018_08_09_13.jpg\" alt=\"2018_08_09_13.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Take the bearing out of the packer and make sure it&#8217;s got a coating of grease.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4067\" src=\"https:\/\/mechanicalmalarkey.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/2018_08_09_14.jpg\" alt=\"2018_08_09_14\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Place the inner bearing into the back of the rotor, small side in.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4068\" src=\"https:\/\/mechanicalmalarkey.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/2018_08_09_15.jpg\" alt=\"2018_08_09_15\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Apply a light coating of grease to the seal. You can reuse the old seal if it&#8217;s in good condition, I bought new seals.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4069\" src=\"https:\/\/mechanicalmalarkey.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/2018_08_09_16.jpg\" alt=\"2018_08_09_16\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Place the seal into the back of the rotor, cup side in. Tap it in with a hammer.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4070\" src=\"https:\/\/mechanicalmalarkey.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/2018_08_09_17.jpg\" alt=\"2018_08_09_17.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Slide the rotor and bearing onto the spindle.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4071\" src=\"https:\/\/mechanicalmalarkey.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/2018_08_09_18.jpg\" alt=\"2018_08_09_18\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Pack the outer bearing with new grease.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4072\" src=\"https:\/\/mechanicalmalarkey.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/2018_08_09_19.jpg\" alt=\"2018_08_09_19\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Place the outer bearing onto the spindle, into the rotor.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4077\" src=\"https:\/\/mechanicalmalarkey.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/2018_08_09_20.jpg\" alt=\"2018_08_09_20.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Put the washer on the spindle.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4078\" src=\"https:\/\/mechanicalmalarkey.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/2018_08_09_211.jpg\" alt=\"2018_08_09_21.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Screw the nut on. Don&#8217;t tighten it, get it just barely snug, just a tiny bit loose. Tightening it down will end up damaging the bearings.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4079\" src=\"https:\/\/mechanicalmalarkey.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/2018_08_09_221.jpg\" alt=\"2018_08_09_22.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If your vehicle&#8217;s nut isn&#8217;t a castle nut, install the nut cover.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4080\" src=\"https:\/\/mechanicalmalarkey.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/2018_08_09_231.jpg\" alt=\"2018_08_09_23.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Install the cotter pin.
