There were a few spots that I wanted to touch up when it got warm, especially the bumpers.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3893\" src=\"https:\/\/mechanicalmalarkey.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/2018_05_10_01.jpg\" alt=\"2018_05_10_01\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The part of the truck I disliked most was the front bumper. It was obviously originally chrome, and the previous owner&#8217;s black paintjob had not lasted very well, so it was the first thing I worked on.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3894\" src=\"https:\/\/mechanicalmalarkey.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/2018_05_10_02.jpg\" alt=\"2018_05_10_02\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>To get the bumper ready to paint I used a wire wheel on a drill and some sandpaper. It felt wrong to use sandpaper on chrome, but with the condition this bumper is in I don&#8217;t think any purists could really get mad at me.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3895\" src=\"https:\/\/mechanicalmalarkey.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/2018_05_10_03.jpg\" alt=\"2018_05_10_03\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A lot of black paint came off with the wire wheel, and I think the scratches from the sandpaper should help the paint to stick. I&#8217;m not expecting it last that long, really, just to look better for a while.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3896\" src=\"https:\/\/mechanicalmalarkey.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/2018_05_10_04.jpg\" alt=\"2018_05_10_04\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The rear bumper wasn&#8217;t as bad looking as the front, because it didn&#8217;t start out as chrome, but it also wasn&#8217;t too pretty. It was kind of a dull grey with lots of spots of some other color. I quickly sanded it down to get it ready.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3897\" src=\"https:\/\/mechanicalmalarkey.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/2018_05_10_05.jpg\" alt=\"2018_05_10_05\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The other parts I wanted to paint were the fender flares, because chrome just doesn&#8217;t look right with camo. There was still some paint left on them from the original camo paint coat but most was long gone. Some time with sandpaper is all I did to give it some scratches.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3898\" src=\"https:\/\/mechanicalmalarkey.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/2018_05_10_06.jpg\" alt=\"2018_05_10_06\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It took a bit of time, and a lot of newspaper, but I masked off everything I needed to to be able to paint the fender flares and bumpers decently.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3900\" src=\"https:\/\/mechanicalmalarkey.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/2018_05_10_08.jpg\" alt=\"2018_05_10_08\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>My friend Tatiana came over to help, and it turned out she was a lot better at spray painting than me, so I let her handle most of the work.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3901\" src=\"https:\/\/mechanicalmalarkey.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/2018_05_10_09.jpg\" alt=\"2018_05_10_09\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The fender flares turned out really good. Much better match than the chrome.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3915\" src=\"https:\/\/mechanicalmalarkey.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/2018_05_10_101.jpg\" alt=\"2018_05_10_10\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The front bumper looks pretty good, besides some runs from excess when I did the first coat. I also finally screwed the license plate on instead of hanging it from zip ties.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3903\" src=\"https:\/\/mechanicalmalarkey.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/2018_05_10_11.jpg\" alt=\"2018_05_10_11\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The rear bumper also looks much better, almost like new except for the dents.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3904\" src=\"https:\/\/mechanicalmalarkey.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/2018_05_10_12.jpg\" alt=\"2018_05_10_12\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>One final touch I wanted to do was the emblems on the sides of the cab. On the left side the only emblem still attached was the &#8220;custom&#8221; one, but I also had the &#8220;F-250&#8221; one.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3905\" src=\"https:\/\/mechanicalmalarkey.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/2018_05_10_13.jpg\" alt=\"2018_05_10_13\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After removing the emblem there was still some of the tape stuck to the cab, as well as some now-exposed red paint, and some rust.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3906\" src=\"https:\/\/mechanicalmalarkey.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/2018_05_10_14.jpg\" alt=\"2018_05_10_14\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Some time with the wire wheel and sandpaper got it ready for a quick spray of paint.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3907\" src=\"https:\/\/mechanicalmalarkey.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/2018_05_10_15.jpg\" alt=\"2018_05_10_15\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s nowhere near smooth, but it&#8217;s good enough for this truck. The paint should be the same color, but I&#8217;m pretty sure what was already on the truck has faded a lot.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3908\" src=\"https:\/\/mechanicalmalarkey.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/2018_05_10_16.jpg\" alt=\"2018_05_10_16\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After painting the emblems matte black, I stuck them back on with double sided tape.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3909\" src=\"https:\/\/mechanicalmalarkey.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/2018_05_10_17.jpg\" alt=\"2018_05_10_17\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The right side only had the &#8220;F-250&#8221; still on it.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3910\" src=\"https:\/\/mechanicalmalarkey.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/2018_05_10_18.jpg\" alt=\"2018_05_10_18\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Pulling off the emblem also pulled off a large section of paint.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3911\" src=\"https:\/\/mechanicalmalarkey.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/2018_05_10_19.jpg\" alt=\"2018_05_10_19\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If I was trying to make this really nice I would spend a lot more time on the rusty spot and smoothing everything out, but there&#8217;s a lot of rust elsewhere on the truck so it&#8217;s not really worth it.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3912\" src=\"https:\/\/mechanicalmalarkey.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/2018_05_10_20.jpg\" alt=\"2018_05_10_20\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Another quick shot of paint and it&#8217;s good enough for the emblems.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3913\" src=\"https:\/\/mechanicalmalarkey.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/2018_05_10_21.jpg\" alt=\"2018_05_10_21\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Matte black emblems look so much better with camo than chrome ones.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3916\" src=\"https:\/\/mechanicalmalarkey.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/2018_05_10_22.jpg\" alt=\"2018_05_10_22\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>My truck almost looks like a completely different truck with the chrome changed to black.
